START Oak Bark Veg-Tanned Devon Leather Apron, Dark Oak

Made for the Professional, or Home Chef, for Artisans, Makers and Creators, my bespoke, supple leather apron is both practical and stylish.

My original leather apron, made as a birthday gift was where the idea for ROCWORX started.  The apron name is also a tribute to one of my favourite coastal walks near Start Point Lighthouse, a working lighthouse in the most exposed point of the Devon coast, which has been guiding ships through the English Chanel since 1836.

Designed and made to order, each START apron is hand cut from one hide, hand stitched with waxed linen thread, using a traditional saddle stitch. It is then hand assembled, using brass and copper rivet fixings. The metal hardware is made in a foundry in the Midlands, England or here in South Devon.

The full grain leather comes from a tannery in Devon.  Oak bark and veg-tanning leather is a slow and considered process, taking up to 15 months, with hides sitting in vast pits of oak bark and vegetation water.  The only chemical used in the process is lime, which is non-toxic and has a minimal impact on the environment.  The oak bark used in the tanning process, is responsibly sourced from coppiced trees, in a managed forest in Northern England and the hides are from Devon and Cornish herds.

After tanning, each hide is then dressed and hand-stained by a master currier, using techniques passed down from generation to generation. The full grain leather is intact, with natural marks and imperfections on the surface of the hide.  In my opinion, it is the best British leather available and the fact that it is a sustainable by-product from the food industry and 100% compostable at the end of its long life, makes this an eco-conscious product.

The apron ties are lined with a hand ink-marbled veg-tanned Dartmoor sheepskin, making each apron a piece of textile art and one of a kind. The marbling is abstract and nature inspired.

With brass Sam Browne buttons, the neck tie is adjustable and the generous lined waist ties are riveted through a D-Ring. There is also a large, deep, pocket and choice of either a chef’s towel slot, or a second pocket, which I emboss with the ROCWORX logo, branding my aprons for authenticity, showing the British handmade craftmanship.

The edges are creased and burnished by hand, a time-consuming part of the making process, smoothing and sealing the edge of the leather to a fine shine. I also personalise your apron with an embossed riveted label.

Custom Logo Stamps can be made to order for corporate business personalisation, so please get in touch for a quote.

A final wax, using my hand-poured BEESROC Balm and the aprons isready for years of enjoyment.  I include one of my balms in a care pack, sent out with every leather apron.

If you’re using my complimentary gift-wrapping service, the apron is wrapped in tissue, placed in a linen bag.  I stock a growing range of marbled cards, found in Accessories, which you can add to your order, just let me know what you want to say when you add the gift card.
